Music is a big part of our household – from sporadic dance parties, singing our fave tunes, making up new songs, and jamming to popular faves on the radio. I cannot imagine a life without music. Music shows improvement in test scores, higher graduation rates, and increased reading skills. As parents of young children, you may be wondering why I am even noting things for much older children, but the foundation you set now will show benefits well into adulthood. The NAMM foundation shares the key benefits – such as fine motor skill development, memorization, and melodies. Kindermusik® is one of those opportunities. Kindermusik® helps infants through 3 ½ year olds embrace music, create bonds with friends and other families, build a sense of community and grow through music and movement.
If you live in the RVA area like my crew, Kindermusik® with Samantha is the place to be. If you are not in RVA, check out the Kindermusik® International page, to find a class near you. There are various class options with Kindermusik®; Foundations class (0 – 18 months), and the Level 2 class (18 months – 3 ½). Kindermusik music and movement activities are highly researched. They stimulate all the different developmental areas of the brain – cognitive, social, emotional, physical, and musical. Children learn musical concepts such as tempo, steady beat, turn taking, vocal inflections, music from a variety of cultures and increase social skills and interactional concepts like pretend play, imagination, and creativity. We stimulate the vestibular system to enhance balance and coordination. We create life-long music lovers. In the Foundations class we rock, sing, dance, explore with chime balls, drums, scarves, shakers, rainbow makers and more. In the Level 2 class the love of reading is included by joining it to our musical experience, we dance, rock, sing, jump, bounce, wiggle, and move in countless children inspired ways. We infuse our life experiences into our song lyrics, and we interact with shakers, hoops, scarves, sand blocks, rhythm sticks and more.
Each semester is 15 weeks long and gives families time to create meaningful relationships with other families in their area. The units focus on topics we can all relate to such as home, animals, and transportation. One thing that sets Kindermusik® apart is that the class is accompanied by home kits. These home kits provide the music, books, an instrument and activity book. Families are encouraged to experience their songs in the car, while waiting in line, while rocking their children before bed and as a morning greeting.
Kindermusik® with Samantha classes are a place of acceptance and love. When you look around the room, in the true Kindermusik® fashion, you will find children interacting with the music and movement in a variety of personal ways, based on their age, stages, interests, and mood. Samantha is amazing at teaching in a multilevel way so that younger and older children are getting their needs met. I link the ways we move to musical terms and embrace the current focus of the child at hand. Children are also developing a steady beat over time, with a lot of instrument play along activities and movement. This helps with bouncing a ball, cutting with scissors, and reading. Kindermusik® helps children to have a better concept of themselves, and their movements in space and time.
Going into Kindermusik®, I already knew my boys would be in their element. We embrace music and movement daily starting almost the moment we wake up with songs and playlists. We listen to every genre and we make up our own songs. We have daily dance parties and we love to use movement to express our emotions and feelings. Kieran was 3 weeks old when we started class, and he has transitioned from snoozing the class away to joining in by coo-ing and moving with mommy. He giggles and enjoys every second – and then promptly passes out for a nice long nap after! Watching them build bonds with other families and engage in learning with same age children has been a true joy. Kindermusik® is a journey – just like parenting. Make lifelong friendships and incorporate music into your lives starting today!
The upcoming semester begins in mid-January with a theme of animals for the Level 2 class and nursery rhymes for the Foundation class. Enrollment is ongoing and makes an ongoing gift!
