Making time for your health and fitness!


Number 1 excuse – “I don’t have time right now.” TIME.

24 hours in a day, 60 minutes in an hour = 1,440 minutes in a day.

60 seconds in minute and 86,400 seconds in a day. We all get the very same time each day.  From our trash collector, teacher, engineer, scientist, nurse, banker, doctor, work at home mama to our Governor and President. We all have the very same 86,400 seconds a day to use.

Disclaimer – I am NOT discounting your crazy hectic lifestyle and day to day life. We are all living it. We are all overcommitted, overbooked, busy, and tired. But, do we have to be? Do you really not have seconds or minutes to spare? I started this blog a year ago because of all of the mom friends I was meeting and talking to who were hopeless about their health because they were too busy to take care of themselves. People were asking me how in the world I had time to work out every day and cook healthy meals with a 2-year-old and an infant at the time. Why was this / is this still so foreign to so many people?  TIME and how I chose to use it is the answer. It is actually quite simple.

I urge you to use 3 minutes of your 1,440 today and think about how you might use the time you have a little more wisely and meet the goals you have thrown out the window or put on the back burner.

Because here is the thing: (I am about to hop up on my soap box, but do not worry I will hop back down in a few!)

When you don’t make time for your health and fitness, you are wasting time and money at the doctor, pharmacy, on the sofa, and in bed because you are sick and finally crash and burn. So that time you don’t have to spend 30 minutes to an hour to work out every day? You will see that time and money spent on:

-Waiting in the doctor’s office

-Late night run to the pharmacy for over the counter sick meds

-Unpaid time from work

Unhealthy diet contributes to approximately 678,000 deaths each year in the U.S. (Center for Science in the Public Interest).  Heart Disease alone was the leading cause of 599,711 deaths in 2012. Poor diet is noted to be a contributing factor in heart disease.

According to the Trust for America’s Health, if obesity trends were lowered by reducing the average adult body mass index (BMI) by only 5 percent, millions of Americans could be spared serious health problems, and our country could save $158 billion over the next 10 years.  So, outside of time and money that you and your family are wasting let’s look at the BILLIONS of dollars our country is spending because of our lifestyle choices.

STOP RIGHT NOW AND RE-READ THAT PARAGRAPH. If that does not bother you then we need a sit down come to Jesus moment, you and I.I have two boys – 3 and 1. My 3-year-old has had ONE SICK VISIT to the pediatrician in his entire life. My 1-year-old, never. Personally, I have not had a sick visit to the doctor since 2013.  We have paid one 20 dollar copay for my three-year-old to go to the pediatrician IN THREE YEARS! Do you think this is because I keep my kids and myself in a bubble? HECK NO, we are always zooming around Richmond busy as a bee.  It is because I chose to spend my time for myself and my family ensuring that we are active, healthy, and investing in our future in the best way.

You want to talk busy? Excuses, I will throw them at you. I work 30 hours a week, I have a blog, I am a mom to two boys 3 and under, I am a health coach, and my baby hasn’t slept more than 4 hours at night in his entire life.  So, you want to talk tired….GIRLLLLLLLLLLL this mama is the definition of tired.  But, does that stop me? LORD JESUS ALMIGHTY, NO! I get up at 430am and workout.  Sure, I could hit snooze and gain some extra minutes in bed. But it is not the best use of my time and my body and mental capacity thank me so it doesn’t even occur to me to snooze.

I had to get real with you guys today. Because it’s as simple as how YOU choose to use your 86,400 seconds.  If you are struggling to find how you can fit the time to workout, meal plan or cook healthy meals for your family into your day, reach out. Your babies, spouses, friends, and family want you around for a while. They want you healthy and happy to make memories with. You want to enjoy that retirement that you are so busy hustling for.  I know this without hesitation: I will have the first dance with my sons.  I will be the first visitor to the hospital when I become a grandmother.  I will be around to welcome great-grandchildren.  I will soak up every second I have on this Earth.  Use those seconds wisely my friends. Invest in yourself. Trust me, it will be the best use of your time. Do not wait any longer.
