Blinders for success: Your fitness routine.


Have you ever watched a horse race? Ever notice that sometimes those gorgeous and powerful horses are wearing blinders? The Dallas Equestrian summarizes that horses sometimes need to wear blinders to focus on what is ahead, rather than what is on the side or behind. Read that sentence again. Really really read it. Let that sink in for a second. What does this have to do with fitness? It has EVERYTHING to do with fitness.

The blinders are used to keep them focused when racing around a racecourse. The Dallas Equestrian highlights that the jockey has a minimal amount of control over the horse. If a horse decides to take a different route, it will merely move the rider with it, so this can pose problems.

Pose problems you say? Let’s pretend we are horses on a race. Except our race isn’t a mile track it’s a lifelong journey to health and wellness. We’ve got thousands of miles and years to go. This will be the longest and most important race of your life. It might be that you started off really strong out of the gate and pulled quickly into first. You dropped a lot of weight and you crushed it at the gym. Most of the time that horse at beginning of pack doesn’t win though. You got comfortable with knowing you were in first and slacked off. But it’s that steady horse coming around and finishing strong that will take the win. Be the steady horse on your journey. Buckle down, set a reasonable goal, and take healthy steps to get there.


So how does this relate? Why am I quoting horse magazines? Because comparing yourself to others is a sure fire way to sabotage yourself and your goals. Have you ever done that at the gym? Looked around and thought: “Her workout clothes are fancier” “She’s really skinny” “His muscles are bigger than mine.”

Be 100% honest with yourself – we are all guilty. Even me; I noticed this morning when we were working on seat work at Pure Barre that when it got hard and I wanted to stop I glanced around to see what the others were doing. Were they stopping? Were they struggling and shaking too?
Then it hit me like a ton of bricks – why do I care if they are stopping? I’m not comparing myself to anyone else. So I closed my eyes, reset my purpose and then opened up to stare at myself in the mirror and boy did my strength return tenfold. I powered through and knew that I needed to put on my blinders and do it for me. Not for any other person in that room. ME!

The Dallas Equestrian also says “Troublesome racehorses are fitted with blinders for their own safety and the jockey’s safety.” For your own safety and sanity on this health journey, grab a pair of “blinders” put those bad boys on and do this for you. Because I PROMISE if you stay true to the course and stop comparing yourself to the other horses on the track, you WILL get that win.


And if you stay the course and keep those blinders on, you’ll still be racing long after those other horses lose their steam and are no longer running. Long after their bodies have given up or thrown in the towel you’ll still be racing. Hang in there with me friends, we are just warming up!
